Decided to try some limit online since I haven't played in a while...
played some 2/4 and 1/2. The 2/4 I won one of the first few hands and then basically blinded down to almost nothing ($16 from $40). There was a player at the table with $250, I immediately surmised that he would probably just throw a lot of money at pretty much any pot he was in. This was a bad idea, not because I was incorrect, but because that caused me to make plays against him. The problem was I didn't think about the fact that if this player liked throwing money at the pot, the chances of him laying anything down were prolly minimal. This fact was confirmed when I tried to bet him out of a pot with an OESD and he called down with A high on a paired board, only to river bottom pair... $40 gone, I made a few mistakes, so this didn't sting so much, I lost, but I prolly deserved it. 1/2 was slighly more eventful, my first hand in I catch AK in the BB, UTG raises with short stack, about $7. I cap with him preflop and the flop comes under me, he bets out I reraise to put him all-in. He shows Q3 and rivers the Q. Whatever, he's a moron this is fine, I'm ok with that. Well, later in the same orbit I catch TT in late position, wildman from before in the BB. UTG calls, I raise, wildman makes it 3 UTG caps. Flop comes under my pair, wildman bets, UTG folds, I reraise and we cap. Next card I believe was a Q, but it didn't worry me because of the previous play with Q3, so I raise all-in, wildman shows AA. With the small amount of bets I have left and the flop, I really don't see how I can get away from this hand. It's clear to me now that I am running horrid... joy. I also busted out of the 10+1 and a 6+.60. The $6.60 I tried to get a player to lay down when I knew he did have one of the paired cards on the board, which was also top pair. Honestly, I should've known better. The beats in the cash games may have played into this. I had second pair, as did my opponent, but he had me out kicked so out I go.

Ok, also decided to play some .25/.50 shorthanded NLHE... the highlight, someone's 66 outflopping my TT, all-in preflop... Honestly I mean you could easily say "oh well you shoulda quit while you were ahead," but how do you accomodate for shit like this happening? I really really love playing good poker and ending the night even. I mean yeah it's my own fault for not stopping when I was up, but aren't you supposed to keep playing if you're playing well? I mean I know that sounds kind of conceited but when I keep losing my money to people who are HUGE dogs when it goes in, I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say that I'm making the right plays here.

Well I've been lazy, I haven't been posting recently so here's the update...

I had minor BR fluctuations and was hovering between 80 and 110 for the past few days until the 24th. I decided to play some ring games, .25/.50 NLHE, which I seem to have pretty good luck with. Unfortunately my KK ran into AA, bye bye $25. I lost a little more playing some .10/.25, no real big hands I just wasn't hitting much, made it hard to win.
Then I decided to play a 20+2 sng because I had played in one a few nights before and they seem to be much softer now than I remember them. I woke up to KK, raised the pot preflop and was reraised all-in by a player in late position. I immediately call and he flips over 99, he flops his 9 and I go out in 8th. Since I didn't possibly think lightning could strike twice, I played in another 20+2 where the following hand occurs
I have AQos in early position, I raise the pot and am called by the SB. The flop comes under me and my opponent thinks for a second and bets the pot. I smell something funny and reraise him to put him all-in. He thinks for about 10 seconds, at which point I know my read was 100% right. He calls anyway and shows AJ, turn is a jack. I was crippled and busted out shortly after. This left my BR at a whopping 6.84, so I played a $5.50 basically just for fun and to try some stuff out, bubbled.
This session really bothered me. I can handle losing coinflips, I can handle flush draws hitting. The reason this bothered me is because of the plays that I made. I couldn't have played these hands much better than I did, and I still lost. I felt like a running back who breaks 8 tackles to score a last second game winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, only to have the play called back because someone on the other side of the field, completely away from the play, held someone that couldn't have gotten to the ball anyway.
So I decided what the hell, I'd go back to the tried and true money maker, and today took a trip to Empress in Joliet for some 5/10 action. I really didn't catch much for about the first two hours and pretty much fluctuated from being down $50 to up $10. I picked up a couple of small pots playing A8 and A9 in late position and hitting my ace. I went on a dinner break and then shortly after I came back, my pocket 3's blossomed into quads and I took down a big pot. Still, a lot of my draws weren't hitting and my QQ got cracked. I basically bled back down to $100 up and then left.
Looking back, I think in the last hour or so I was prolly playing some of my hands too far and chasing draws that, while I was getting 10 to 1 on the flop, were probably too remote. I am currently finishing up Making of a Poker Player by Matt Matros, but I think after that I'm going back to re-read Sklansky and Malmuth's Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em to help my plug up a couple of small leaks I may have developed so I can maximize these sessions again. Since I finished up $100, I'm going to go ahead and redeposit on Full Tilt. I'm probably going to focus on SNGs and MTT tournaments. I'm pretty comfortable with my cash game play right now. My reads online and live are pretty solid so I'm thinking I can hopefully parlay this into my first public MTT win, but we shall see. So long as I can play solid and consistently money in these tournaments, I should still be ok but a big score would really be nice.
I'm rededicating myself to this blog now and I'm gonna chalk up my missing posts to uneventful short sessions and holiday laziness. Thanks to all of you who continue to read, while I am doing this for me, to know people are reading helps me feel more obligated to continue to make entries.

Session Recap, Full Tilt Poker 12/20/05 12-5:30AM AKA Micro Limit Hold 'Em Blows/Semi-bluff Trouble/PWNED

Ok this session I played a variety of games. We had some 10+1 sng, some .10/.25 NLHE, a 10+1 MTT, .50/1.00 LHE and finally, where I made my money back and even a little profit, .25/.50 shorthanded NLHE. A couple of things I'd like to talk about...

Micro Limit Hold 'Em Blows
OK, I've played limit hold 'em online for quite sometime and I am at a loss as to how people consistently beat this game. It seems to me that with micro limit (.50/1 and below) the pots don't get big enough to use effective strategy and still beat the rake. Granted this is just preliminary and I'm sure there's a way to turn a small profit on this game but I don't see how it can be worth it. The only real way I can see doing well in this type of envirionment is to stick to playing mostly big hands, and occasionally a speculative hand in postion on the rare occaison that there are more than 4 people in the pot preflop. My problem with this strategy is that you are at the mercy of the deck and outdraws, yet you're really not giving yourself the chance to play drawing hands and redraws that makes live low limit hold 'em strategy so effective. Granted I may have played a particularly tight table tonight, but I seem to remember similar experiences when I've played at these limits before. I absolutely love playing Limit Hold 'Em. I cannot, however, enjoy micro limit hold 'em. I liken it to scratch off tickets; cheap thrills that really don't accomplish much.

Semi-Bluff Trouble
Lately I can't semi-bluff sucessfully. Not because I bluff into made hands, not because I don't give myself the right odds, but because, thanks to ESPN, the internet is a variable chuck wagon of morons who wouldn't know what a fold button looked like if it sat on their face. I have been called on semi-bluffs in the past two day with KTos, A5os and, my personal favorite, QJs. Ok, now I understand what you're going to say... "But Huck, they had you beat." Yes. They did. You're right... They also called off most of their stack with, oh I dunno, try K high and no draw. Ok, if I'm in a hand I have KT on a 469 board and you be about 3/4 of the pot, guess what, I don't really give a shit what you have, unless I make a stupendous read, I'm folding... like my cards are on fire... and have herpes simplex A. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot, if I do make a read... (cough)... I SURE AS SHIT AM NOT CALLING YOU. I'm raising... big... like "that monkey in the new Peter Jackson flick" big. I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to abandon this play for a little while, because it's just simply not working for me in the environments I'm playing in right now. Yeah I know it sounds bad to say, but the players are just too bad, they won't fold, the play is too complex.

Ok, now when he bet out on the flop, I knew he didn't hit a 3, duh. When he bet out on the turn, I decided he couldn't have a jack either and here's my rationale: By smooth calling on the flop, I was repping a pair over the board. If he did have a jack, I figured that my smooth call of such a large bet on the flop would have to look like a trap. When he bet out on the turn for the rest of his stack it just didn't make sense. If he had a three, or two jacks he would prolly check the turn and hope that I bet at it, he pretty much has to after I smooth call such a huge bet. If he only had a Jack, I just don't see him moving in, it's too wild of a play with that hand even for this table, once again after I smooth call such a huge bet on the flop. Granted I didnt' put him on the draw, basically I put him on nothing, with which one card left to come was close enough. The funny part was after the hand was over this guy accused me of being lucky. Yes, he's so right. Honestly, I didn't make a read. Really, I just like calling off the rest of my chips when I think I'm drawing at two outs... IS THIS GUY HIGH? If he wants to sit around thinking that the only reason he lost that hand is because I'm some donk who can't lay wired 5's that's cool, maybe he'll continue playing like an open fucking book. Also, note the name of the player sitting to my immediate left.

Session Notes, Full Tilt Poker, 12:15 AM - 3:35 AM 12/19/05

Played a couple of 10+1 sit and go's in the first I was actually down to 190 chips with 8 people left and blinds at 30/60 and I ended up coming back to finish 2nd. In the other I also finished second. I think I may be overplaying middle pair heads up, but I'm not sure. In the second sng I flopped middle pair and a flush draw. My opponent bet out about 3/4 of the pot, I minireraised him and he moved all-in, I called, had top pair and I didn't hit any of my two pair, trip, or flush outs... aw well. I also played at the FTF table a little and lose my initial buy-in of $10. On the first hand an opponent took half my stack when I raised preflop and he flopped a set. I called off the rest on draw, prolly not the best idea, but I didn't feel like trying to grind up $4 to $25, which is always my goal when I sit at a .10/.25 NLHE table with $10.

Ok now I won this hand, but I feel I made a mistake on the river. On the turn I put deaston on a flush draw, so when the club hit on the river, I was hesitant to throw a lot of money at the pot. The problem is, I didn't think of our relative chip stacks before I made my river bet. The $3 bet I made on the river left me approximately $5 left, and before calling the bet, Deaston's stack was only $6.30. This means that if Deaston does have the flush and comes back over the top of me for the other $3.30, I find myself basically pot commited to call. I think I got pretty lucky that he didn't have the flush, because he definitely would have forced me to make a crying call to his all-in. This is one of a few holes I have in my actual play. A lot of times I kind of rush through hands and don't take into account stack size, equity, things like that. I really need to make an effort to be more deliberate at the table to avoid putting myself in situations like this one, even though this particular time it worked out for the best.

Casino Trip Report 12/16

Went to Hollywood Casino in Aurora with a buddy of mine who used to go to NIU with me. We got there at about 4:15, which we like to do because usually you can hit the changeover from the day people to the night people and that way you don't have to wait very long. The room only has 6 tables and they usually only have 5 running at one time, especially on the weekends because of some dumb Illinois gaming regulation about a limit to the amount of gaming seats in a particular establishment. Usually on Friday the room runs two 10/20 tables and two 5/10 tables, with one feeder table, which is usually for the 5/10. Well yesterday the feeder table was 10/20, meaning my buddy and I didn't get to sit until about 6:45. I played a little loose for the first hour because I really wasn't feeling well. After about the first hour and a half, due to lack of cards and a slightly looser hand selection, I found myself stuck about $150 of my $300 buy-in. I battled back well though picking up a lot of small and medium sized pots, one with a set of deuces and another with pocket aces and trip 9's on the board. A few hours and a couple of King high flushes later, I actually find myself up about $150, then this hand happens: I limp in late postion with Kh9h and the flop comes out 8hTh3h. We're five handed and the player with first action checks, 2nd bets, 3rd calls, I raise, last to act and first to act muck. 2nd calls and so does 3rd. The turn comes a blank and the player now in 1st position (2nd last round) bets out again, this time 2nd pos (3rd last hand) raises. I'm completely perplexed at this point and I call, as does an equally perplexed 1st position.

Time for an aside... 1st betting position (on the turn) was a man approximately in his late 40's 2nd betting position (on the turn) was a woman prolly about 5 years older than me. We had been talking a lot since she was on my immediate right and it was clear to me that she was not extremely experienced playing limit hold em. She had been showing me her hands and things like that and I was giving her a few pointers if she asked for em. Anyway, on the flop, I knew that one of the players in the hand with me had a set. I didn't know what the other player had but I was hoping it was a lower flush than mine. As soon as the suited board came out I decided that I was going to assume that my flush was good and try to maximize value on this hand, assuming a 4th heart didn't hit the board. If someone else had flopped the nuts, I was going to let them take me for a ride because I wasn't about to play afraid on the off-hand chance that God hated me and someone else was on AhXh.

Aside over... The river card comes another blank, (it brought a straight possibility but no heart and no paired board). The man in 1st position checks, lady in 2nd bets, I am once again perplexed and I raise. 1st position folds and 2nd reraises. At this point I have a feeling I may be sunk but the pot is too huge to fold. I call and she shows me AhQh, we're pretty much back to even. Now I was in the 9 seat and my buddy was in the 1 seat. After the hand the 2 and 3 seats, who are regulars at this room and were generally act like God's gift to poker most of the time (which is cute because they're basically weak-tight nut-peddlers who get pissed when their aces get cracked in limit... don't you have to have experience to be a grinder? Wouldn't an experienced player know that aces in limit...nevermind) I fuckin hate those guys... were criticizing my raise on the river. They basically said that I should have put the woman on the nut flush. Ok, two things. 1) Against a tighter player, I would agree with this, but I sat next to this woman for 4 hours at this point. She was a nice lady, but she had poor hand selection and a tendency to overplay. 2) I'm sorry but in a limit game I refuse to play afraid of the nuts. I made the hand I was trying to make when I limped in with my K9s, and it was the second nuts. If I play that hand passively, I don't lose as much in that pot, that's for sure, but the 9 out of 10 times the second nut is good, I lose more with the money that I don't make.

A classic example of this occurred earlier in the night, and was pretty much one of the biggest pots I won. I limped with 56s in early position and flopped the ass end of the straight. I Was first to act on every street. I led out at the pot on every round and got 4 callers on every round except for the river, on which I got 2. Two blanks did my body good and the low straight took it down. Now, had I gotten reraised, would I have been worried? Yes. Would I have folded? FUCK NO. I would've relinquished the driver's seat and check/called down, but that's also because I only had like the 9th or 10th nut when the board paired on the river. Now maybe I'm just weird or crazy or both but to me flopping the ass end of a straight and playing it fast until you meet resistance, or flopping the 2nd nut flush and playing it fast isn't exactly mind-bending, but I guess I'm not good enough to lay down the 2nd nuts in a limit game... and I'm ok with that.

All in all, I had fun, which is my first goal everytime I play live. Near the end I actually picked up 4 small pots in a row, 3 of them uncontested, and I left up about $75. Hollywood Casino is ok, but I prefer my "home" casino, The Empress in Joliet, expect a trip report from there to come in the next few weeks.

Completely Unrelated... Almost

I hate unoriginal poker aliases... with a passion. I am currently sitting in a 10+1 sng with a player named "Count Scoopula." Are you kidding me? Ok, if you're going to create a poker alias that is somehow related to the game, don't make it something like "GIVEMEYOCHIPS" or "SHIP IT" or "Count Scoopula." And I know you are asking right now, "But why Huck, why?" Well my pretties allow me to elaborate. With such a name, guess what, I know you suck as a poker player. Yes, that's right... suck. Now I know you're sitting there asking yourself "But Huck, how can you tell that just from a name?" Easy. Poker is an analytical game. The practices of baiting, trapping, and deception are so firmly engrained in successful poker that you could not remove them with Lou Ferrigno and a pry-bar. So, this being said, if you really were anything other than loose/shitty, your name would not talk about you winning/making money/pwning/skull-fucking/curing cancer. Secondly, the wonderful grammatical ability and extreme bravado immortalized in such names as "GIVEMEYOCHIPS" reek of a lack of the necessary formal education required to grasp a game such as poker. Do you want to know the player I'm afraid of at the poker table?



Dyson. Dyson scares the shit out of me. A)It's a quasi obscure reference that probably only 3/4 of the population will get... he's making that joke for him boys and girls, fuck you if you don't get it. Second, the name implies that Dyson sucks, (if you don't get this part, google my friend, google). So for those of you keeping score at home we now have one (1) semi-obscure reference and one (1) implication of suckitude. Because of these factors, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that Dyson is of at least above average intelligence. This poses another problem, because this means Dyson probably has a raging hard-on for irony. Now I know a good player named Dyson is not truly ironic in the Carlinesque sense of the word but just hang with me on this one. Dyson is funny to Dyson because A)It's, as previously established, it's a quasi-obscure reference, but more importantly, and here comes the bombshell boys and girls... B)DYSON DOESN'T SUCK In fact, on a good day, I bet Dyson could probably PWN you and everything you care about, because that's just how he rolls...

And even if all that shit isn't true, at least his name is funnier than "GIVEMEYOCHIPS..."

Honestly I messed this one up pretty good. Prolly because I hadn't seen a hand, I overplayed this by coming in for a raise UTG. When the flop came out and he reraised me all-in, I knew he didn't like his hand, he wanted to push me out. The problem is I didn't think of how many hands he could be unhappy with in this situation such as KJ, that still beat me. In all honestly the only hand I was worried about him having was AK, and I knew he didn't have that because of the all-in reraise. What I should have realized is that at limits this low a lot of players will be in there with less than premium hands, even facing an UTG raise. He was protecting a hand he wasn't happy with, but just because he wasn't happy with it doesn't mean it didn't have me killed. I skipped a step in my thought process and it cost me.

Session notes, Full Tilt Poker, 12/15/05, Early AM... AKA TT Quandry and Why He Didn't Have Two Pair

Ok, so I decided screw it, if I'm gonna every be good at this game, I can't give up. After a drunken talk with a friend from fulltiltforum.com, I decided that I need to start taking poker seriously and make my best effort to play up to my potential EVERY TIME I play the game. I took $50 and put it on Full Tilt. I had to redeposit because I donked off approximately $200 while drunk on 12/13 early in the AM. I have decided that until I build my roll, I will stick to .10/.25 NLHE rings and 10+1 and 5+.50 sng tournaments, with the occassional low buy-in MTT. This is because these ring games and SNGs are the best, while small profit, consistent money makers for me.

Okay so Session #1: Starting BR - $50.04 Ending BR - $70.04 +$20

This session I played a mixture of .10/.25 NLHE and three 10+1 Sngs. Sng finishes, 1st, 6th, and 3rd, net profit $20 which means I broke even on my ring games. I will get to the SNGS in a second but first I would like to discuss the ring play. I was stuck $20 early with a couple of tough beats. AA lost to 67os when the flop came 2,4,5. I throw out my standard flop bet and am immediately moved in on. At this point the hand 45s flashes through my head... the thing is I had sat at the table with $10 and $4.50 of it was in the pot. In addition, this was a huge overbet. Normally I will consider such an overbet a bluff, but I knew the player I was playing against was tricky and may be using the overbet as a ploy with a made hand, which made this call difficult. Honestly, it wasn't a read that made me call, it was the over 3:1 the pot was laying me that made me call. I call, the cards come up and the turn comes 7 river 8, giving villain a straight. Another hand involved me having KK against AQ, the flop coming under both of us. This time I used the overbet read to call with my KK, once again still and easy call, just needed to rule out two pair, but the overbet read helped me do that. I call, river A, and daddy's stuck $20 just like that... isn't this game beautiful?

Ok this hand came up in an SNG and I boned it, so I'ma post it here and explain, in hindsight, how I fucked up. I don't have the hand history for this one, but I remember it pretty well. I have TT 1 off the button. Blinds are 100/200, I have approx 1600 in my stack. UTG miniraises to 200. This immediately flags for me. I put him on a monster, this is a bush league play that is common at this level. I read him on AA, KK, or AK, and somehow decide on AK. I call, flop comes K43. This is where I fuck up. My initial read is AK, when the King comes out I should be checking and ready to relinquish the pot at the first sign of aggression from my opponent. Instead, I'm a dumbass and try to (successfully might I add) convince myself that my opponent is not on AK, but AQ. This is a horrible move on my part because it doesn't jive with the mini-raise preflop, so basically I'm a moron. I bet out 350 into a 500 pot Mistake#2: This is where I marry myself to the hand, til death do me part from my money. I am immediately minireraised, ignore the giant fucking neon sign that says "YOU ARE CRUSHED YOU MORON LAY IT DOWN AND AT LEAST LEAVE WITH YOUR DIGNITY" that appears over my monitor and I move all in to... you guessed it AdKd... PWNED. This is a common problem I have in tournament play, talking myself into calls, hence I mention it here, so you can all publicly ridicule me for it so, hopefully, I'll stop.

Why He Didn't Have Two Pair
This is the hand that got me back to even in ring games. I have KhJh UTG, I limp, yeah that's right I said it, I limp, it's like 6 handed to the flop, Flop comes Kxx unconnected. I bet out my standard 60%-80% of the pot and I'm called by one player. Turn comes a 9, I once again bet out 60%-80% of the pot and this time the villain immediately moves all-in to me for around $13. This is a classic overbet play that I'm sure you'll hear me talk time and time again in low stakes NLHE. I call, he has K7, (one pair) river blank... PWNED. Now lemme tell you why I did it. First of all this table was pretty LAG as I was playing at around 5 AM CST, I saw a few huge pots won with just top pair... apparently these dudes drank too much Mountain Dew and watched too much ESPN and wanted to play BALLSY POKER... OMGWTF MORONS, ATMS, LOOSE/SHITTY... good times. But I digress... I lead out at this pot on the flop and lead out on the turn, it's painfully fuckin apparent that "Hey guys, my name's Huck and I'm an Aries and I'm very fucking interested in this hand." Now because this table was so LAG, aggression doesn't scare me, passivity does, because it's not in the flow with their usual play. Ok so when I bet about $4 at that beautiful turn 9 and this donk comes flying back over the top of me like Iceman is his fuckin wingman I get harder than a bucket of water in Alaska in December, because I know if he actually had two pair, he wouldn't be moving, he'd be trapping. He has a weak king at best, maybe even just a turned draw. What would've scared me on that turn? A smooth call has me checking the river unless I trip up or hit my J and a small reraise might get me to muck the hand outright right there.

So those are my notes/waxings/musings for this session... other random thoughts:

McDonald's should serve breakfast 24 hours a day.
Joe Jurevicius has the best hands of any WR in the NFL, that man could catch the clap in a convent.

Ok, I realized that if I ever want to be as good at poker as I think I can be, I'm going to have to start holding myself accountable for my mistakes that I make. I will be using this blog to do just that, tracking games, day and sessions, in addition to waxing philosophical regarding hands and situations that I find particularly interesting. If this bores you that's cool, I'm not doing this for you I'm doing it for me. Hopefully though many of you will find this blog not only entertaining, but shit, maybe even a little bit informative. Worst case scenario, you can at least all find out how I think at the table which should allow you all to beat me like a red-headed stepchild.
